A Pond Sealer that is Effective and Safe: Sodium Bentonite

Sodium Bentonite Pond Sealer

When it comes to sealing ponds and preventing leaks, using a quality pond sealer is particularly important, since substandard sealant often fails to properly and completely seal the pond bed. In addition, low quality products and chemicals can negatively affect the aquatic life in the pond, as well as the pond’s water quality and soil composition.

So, if you are looking for the best, safe pond sealer, you have come to the right place. Here at Southwestern Materials, we have extensive experience when it comes to providing effective pond sealer products to our clients. Why Choose Sodium Bentonite Pond Sealer

Our customers generally come to us for pond sealer because they have bodies of water that feature porous, non-compactable soils, which are therefore prone to loss of water because of seepage. This tends to create difficulties over time because that seepage makes it necessary to add water on a regular basis to maintain appropriate water volume. That seepage could also create negative consequences for any aquatic life in the pond, as well as possible erosion of the pond bed.

One of the best ways to prevent and control this problem is by applying sodium bentonite clay pond sealer to the pond bed. This bentonite pond sealer offers a high rate of swelling, a chemically unaltered composition, and no additives. It is a natural clay that proceeds to swell many times its usual dry size once it saturates in water. By using our bentonite pond sealer, an impermeable layer is created that prevents and controls seepage, while also remaining safe for aquatic wildlife and water quality.

Applying the Pond Sealer

There are several ways to apply the pond sealer product, depending on the circumstances. The two most common approaches that are the preferred methods of application are referred to as the blanket method or the mixed blanket method. However, for these to be workable, the bentonite needs to be applied either before the pond is filled with water, or after the pond has been fully drained.

Use of the blanket method requires that the bentonite be spread in an even layer on top of the porous soil. Then, another layer of natural soil is applied on top of that layer of bentonite. As a result, the bentonite is sandwiched between two layers of soil. In the mixed blanket method, a mixture of bentonite and natural soil is spread evenly on top of the soil layer that is porous.

In situations where it is not possible for the pond to be drained, the sprinkle method is the appropriate way to apply the bentonite. As its name suggests, the pond sealer is scattered over the surface of the water, allowing it to sink and then land on the pond bed, filling in the parts where sealing is needed. The bentonite then proceeds to swell in order to seal the problem spots under the pond.
